Why learn music?

Bowing Tips

  • Make a loose ring with the thumb, middle and ring fingers of the right hand. The other fingers should curve naturally around as well, completely relaxed. Open the loose ring just enough to allow your thumb to rest on the metal of the frog. Curve your pinky on top of the bow.
  • Imagine a soft, warm light hovering in the space between your knuckles, in the palm of your hand.
  • To play louder, do NOT press harder on the bow. Instead, move your bow faster!  The greater the speed of the bow, the greater the sound.
  • Do not tighten bow too much; the proper tightness is when the hair is no more than a centimeter from the wood of the center of your bow.

How to hold the violin

Rest your violin on the collarbone and support it lightly with your left hand and shoulder. The gentle weight from your head, relaxed nec is sufficient to stabilizes the violin on the collarbone. Spend some time simply holding the violin lightly with these contact points. Walk around slowly like this, paying attention to balance and posture.
